“The Legend of Brother Hao” is the first show from the series of dance-up comedy by Yang Hao. It is a solo of approximately 30 minutes, co-created by Yang Hao and Alice Rensy and first shown to audience as part of MOVEMENT#2 supported by EATON (https://www.eatonworkshop.com) and presented in Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts studio 1 in April 2018.

Dance up comedy - Notes from 2018
While creating a dance piece during a residency in Chengdu A4 museum in 2017, Alice Rensy and Yang Hao found out their coming research for the next years will be on a form mixing dance and comedy. Their work has been nourished by Yang’s sense of humour, self-mockery and story telling.
Feeling ready for a long journey on that topic, Yang Hao and Alice Rensy aim at creating a form of communication with audience, on a fine line, not using stereotypes, looking for the right balance between humour and dance, humour in dance, dance in humour, seriousness, truth and fiction. This project is beyond dance. This research is an ongoing process, with four performances already shown. Yang Hao has been researching and practicing comedy. Our references include Bill Irwin, Charlie Chaplin, Jerome Bel, as well as stand-up comedians like Joe Wong. The work has already been shown in English, Cantonese (HK), Mandarin (China). Each language brings a different work. Mixing languages in one performance is also a direction. The purpose is to establish a communication with people from a wide audience. Therefore the performance’s format is flexible, enabling shows in different contexts. For this project Yang Hao and Alice Rensy have had a residence at Hong Kong University from September 2018 to December 2018
